Adelie
Feminine · “noble”
Adelie is a name that went to Antarctica and came back with a penguin. In 1840 the French explorer Dumont d'Urville named a stretch of Antarctic coast Terre Adelie after his wife Adele; the penguins found there took the name of the land, and the name of the land came from a woman. Adelie is the French diminutive of Adele, and its American use is recent, peaking in the 2010s.

The story of Adelie
Adal names spread across Europe with the Franks, and Adele was borne by a daughter of Charlemagne and by a saint of the seventh century. French made Adelie, Adeline and Adelaide from the same stem. In 1840 Jules Dumont d'Urville, mapping the Antarctic coast, named the land he found Terre Adelie for his wife Adele Dorothee Pepin; the penguin species collected there was named Pygoscelis adeliae after the land. That double naming is why an English speaker who has never heard the name Adele may still recognize Adelie instantly. The given name entered American records in small numbers in the 2000s and rose through the 2010s.
Meaning
noble
From the Germanic element adal, 'noble, of good family', which is one of the most productive elements in European naming: it gives Adele, Adela, Adelaide, Adeline, Alice, Ethel and the first half of Albert. Adelie is the French diminutive form, built with the -ie ending that French uses to soften and shorten. The derivation is settled and has been for a very long time.

Pronouncing Adelie
ah-day-LEE
Three syllables in the French saying, with the stress at the end and an accent on the first e. American speakers commonly say AD-uh-lee with front stress, which is the more usual version here. Both are in use; the French one is closer to the source and the American one is easier to get from strangers.

The Korena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Adelie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Korena climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Korena's path sketches the road Adelie is walking now.
Adelie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
