The story of Abena
Akan day names run Akosua, Adwoa, Abena, Akua, Yaa, Afua and Ama for girls, and Kwasi, Kwadwo, Kwabena, Kweku, Yaw, Kofi and Kwame for boys. Kofi and Kwame became internationally familiar through prominent bearers, and the system as a whole traveled with the Atlantic slave trade — Jamaican Quashie, Cudjoe and Phibba all descend from Akan day names, which is one of the clearest surviving linguistic traces of that history in the Caribbean. Abena's American use, peaking in 1973, belongs to the deliberate adoption of West African names during that decade.

The Samra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abena's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Samra climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Samra's path sketches the road Abena is walking now.

The trade-off
- The meaning is completely settled and states something true about the bearer.
- It belongs to a coherent and still-living naming system rather than to fashion.
- Three open syllables make it easy to say in any language.
- The name asserts a day of birth; giving it to a child born on another day is odd within the tradition.
- American pronunciation lengthens the middle vowel.
- It is rare enough in the United States to require explanation.
