The story of Abeer
Arabic perfumery was a technical discipline with a literature. Al-Kindi in the ninth century wrote a book of perfume recipes with over a hundred formulas and descriptions of the equipment; Ibn Sina is credited with refining steam distillation for extracting rose oil. The trade brought in materials from across the known world, ambergris from the sea, musk from Tibet, camphor from Sumatra, sandalwood from India, and the vocabulary traveled with the goods. English took attar, from itr, an essence; camphor from kafur; musk through Arabic from Persian and ultimately Sanskrit; amber from anbar; jasmine from Persian through Arabic; and alcohol from al-kuhl, which originally named powdered antimony used as eye cosmetic and was extended to any fine distillate. The whole English vocabulary of scent is a record of a medieval trade route.
Meaning
Arabic abir, fragrance or perfume
From Arabic abir, a fragrance, scent or aromatic powder. The word belongs to a large Arabic vocabulary for perfume and its ingredients, much of which entered European languages during the medieval period. The doubled e is the South Asian romanisation of the long vowel; Arabic-studies convention writes Abir. It peaks in the American data in 1996.

The Kalliopi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Abeer's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kalliopi climbed just as high around 1973, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kalliopi's path sketches the road Abeer is walking now.
