Abbygale
Feminine · “my father is joy”
For about a century, an abigail was a lady's maid. A play of the 1610s gave the name to a waiting-woman, the part was well known, and English absorbed the word as a common noun — a usage sharpened when a Queen Anne favorite of that name became notorious. The word has gone; the name has not. Abbygale respells it twice over, with a y and an English ending.

The story of Abbygale
The common noun came from a character in Beaumont and Fletcher and was reinforced by Abigail Masham, a bedchamber woman who displaced the Duchess of Marlborough in Queen Anne's affections and was written about savagely for it. By the eighteenth century abigail meant a servant, and the name suffered accordingly in England. America was less affected, and Abigail has been in continuous use here since the colonial period. The modern respellings belong to its recent revival, and this one changes the i to a y and the ending to a familiar English word.
Meaning
my father is joy
From the Hebrew Avigayil, joining the word for father to one meaning joy or rejoicing. It is a statement about the household a daughter was born into rather than a wish for her, which is how a great many Hebrew names of the period were built.

About 1 girl in 48,705 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Abbygale itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
