The story of Zyaire
Mobutu Sese Seko renamed the Democratic Republic of the Congo as Zaire in 1971 as part of a program of authenticité that also changed personal and place names across the country; the name reverted in 1997. In those twenty-six years it became widely known in the United States, and American naming took it up — Zaire appears in American birth records from the 1970s and rises through the 1990s. Zyaire is a respelling of it, using the y-for-a substitution that also produced Zyaire from Zaire and Zyon from Zion. The word behind all of them is a river, and a very large one.

the river that swallows all rivers, through Zaire
Portuguese traders in the fifteenth century recorded the local name of the Congo river as Zaire, from a Kikongo phrase usually given as nzere or nzadi o nzere, 'the river that swallows all rivers'. That derivation is standard. Whether the American name Zyaire descends from the country at all is the uncertain part: it may equally be a Zy- prefix name built the way Zyair and Zaire-adjacent spellings were in the same decade. Both routes are live.

The Felissa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Zyaire's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Felissa climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Felissa's path sketches the road Zyaire is walking now.
Zyaire sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Zy is a short form that is current and works on either sex.
- The Kikongo phrase behind the country's name is genuinely memorable.
- The Z initial makes it distinctive and immediately recognizable.
- Zaire, Zyaire and Zyair all circulate, so records will drift.
- The country no longer exists under that name, which dates the reference.
- It is used on both sexes, so forms may make either assumption.
