Spanish has very few native words beginning with y, and most of them are grammatical: y, and; yo, I; ya, already. Everything else is a loan. That makes a Y at the start of a word conspicuous, and Latin American naming from the 1970s onward has used it heavily and deliberately — Yulisa, Yaneth, Yesenia, Yamilet, Yoselin, Yaritza. The letter marks a name as modern and as chosen rather than inherited, in the same way an initial Z does in American English. It is a small piece of orthographic engineering: the letter carries no sound that a J or an LL could not supply in most of these names, and it is there for the look. Yulisa peaks in 1997.
