Where it comes from

The story of Yulianna

The Julii traced themselves to Iulus, son of Aeneas, and so to Venus, which is why Julius Caesar could give a funeral speech claiming a goddess for an ancestor. The month of July is named for him. The name spread through Christian Europe with several early saints and Slavic languages took it as Yuliana. Yulianna is a Russian and Ukrainian spelling with the doubled n.

Meaning

of the Julian family

From the Roman gens Julia, whose name is of unsettled derivation — possibly from Iulus, the son of Aeneas. Juliana is the feminine of Julianus, belonging to that family. Slavic languages give Yuliana and Yulia.

Yulianna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 80 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Yulianna went to 29 girls in 2025, but Yuliana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 165, which makes it the 795th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,866 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,741 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 55,423 for Yulianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One of the oldest documented family names in Europe stands behind it.
  • Yulia and Anna are both complete names in their own right.
  • Every vowel is sounded, so it reads correctly in most languages.
What to consider
  • Eight letters and four syllables is a lot for early handwriting.
  • Juliana is the familiar English form and will be offered as a correction.
  • The initial Y will be spelled out for her constantly.
