The story of Ysidro
Spanish orthography was standardized gradually, and until the eighteenth century the letters i and y were used more or less interchangeably at the start of words, which is why colonial documents are full of Ysabel, Ynes, Ygnacio and Ysidro. The Real Academia's reforms settled on i, and the y spellings survive mainly in place names fixed before the change and in families that kept them. San Ysidro in California, now the busiest land border crossing in the western hemisphere, carries one of them, and so do San Ysidro in New Mexico and several Mexican towns. The saint himself was a laborer who worked land outside Madrid and was canonized in 1622; he is the patron of farmers, which is why the name traveled with agricultural communities.
Meaning
Greek Isidoros, gift of Isis
Ysidro is an older Spanish spelling of Isidro, from Greek Isidoros, the gift of Isis. San Isidro Labrador, a twelfth-century farm worker outside Madrid, is the city's patron and the reason the name is common in Spanish-speaking countries. The American peak is 1906.
