Where it comes from

Our story of Yancy

Yancy takes a family name long found in American records and trims it to five letters. It opens with the same sound as yes and closes on the bright ee of Nancy and Clancy. Television gave it a figure to fit: Yancy Derringer, a former Confederate officer who comes home to New Orleans as a gambler and quietly works for the city's administrator, his surname a pun on the small pocket pistol called a derringer. The spelling is lighter than the surname it came from, and on paper it looks like a first name rather than a family one.

Not established

Yancy is a spelling of the surname Yancey, whose origin has never been established; the explanations that circulate, including a Native American one, are unsupported. No record says when the e was first dropped from the first-name spelling.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables, spelled as it sounds.
  • Rhymes with familiar names like Nancy and Clancy, so it is easy to say at first sight.
  • Rare, and unlikely to repeat in a classroom.
What to consider
  • It will often be written Yancey, the surname spelling, so expect to spell it out.
  • The one widely known Yancy is a television character from long ago, so most people will have no association at all.
  • It is given mostly to boys but to a real minority of girls, and its rhyme with Nancy lets it read either way; a boy or a girl called Yancy will each be taken for the other at times.
