Yetta
Feminine · “ruler of the home”
Yetta comes from a world where every child had two names. Ashkenazi families gave a Hebrew name for the synagogue and a daily name for everything else, and the daily name was drawn from whatever language the family lived in. Yetta is one of those daily names, and it began as German.

The story of Yetta
The custom is old and precise: a shem hakodesh, the sacred name, used when a person is called to the Torah and written in a marriage contract, and a kinnui, the everyday name, used at home, at work and by neighbors. The two are usually linked by sound or by meaning, sometimes only by habit. Yetta served as the kinnui for Yehudit and for Henrietta alike, and it arrived in America in the great migration from Central and Eastern Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. It stayed in use for two generations and then thinned out, as the whole set of Yiddish daily names did, when American-born children began being given only one name apiece.

ruler of the home
Yetta is generally read as the Yiddish form of Henriette, the French feminine of Henry, which carries that meaning. Some Yettas, though, were the daily name paired with the Hebrew Yehudit, and in those families the sound rather than the sense is what connected them.

Fashion outlook
Yetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, and no sound that an English speaker has to be taught.
- It is immediately recognized in Jewish families as a name with a real place in the tradition.
- Etta is a ready short form and stands alone as a name.
- It is closely tied to one immigrant generation and reads as belonging to it.
- Readers who do not know the name will try Yvetta and Yolanda before landing on it.
- The double-name custom behind it has largely lapsed, so the name now arrives without the system that produced it.
