The story of Yvonne
In August 1962 gunmen of the OAS riddled Charles de Gaulle's car with bullets at Petit-Clamart outside Paris; Yvonne de Gaulle was in the back seat beside him, and the story goes that her first concern afterward was whether the chickens in the boot had survived. Yvonne Brill, a rocket scientist, invented a thruster that kept communications satellites in orbit; when she died in 2013, the New York Times obituary began with her beef stroganoff, readers protested, and the paper rewrote the opening. The name was a common American girls' name for much of the century; the spelling is recorded for a handful of boys, but it is a girl's name in every tradition behind it.

The Genevieve test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yvonne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genevieve climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genevieve's path sketches the road Yvonne is walking now.
