Where it comes from

The story of Yvonne

In August 1962 gunmen of the OAS riddled Charles de Gaulle's car with bullets at Petit-Clamart outside Paris; Yvonne de Gaulle was in the back seat beside him, and the story goes that her first concern afterward was whether the chickens in the boot had survived. Yvonne Brill, a rocket scientist, invented a thruster that kept communications satellites in orbit; when she died in 2013, the New York Times obituary began with her beef stroganoff, readers protested, and the paper rewrote the opening. The name was a common American girls' name for much of the century; the spelling is recorded for a handful of boys, but it is a girl's name in every tradition behind it.

Yvonne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 17 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Yvonne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Instantly recognized and easy to say.
  • A settled meaning with a French pedigree.
  • A long American history.
What to consider
  • It is strongly represented among older generations and rare among babies, so a young Yvonne will stand out.
  • People may spell it Evonne.
  • For a boy it would be very unusual.
