Yaneth is Janeth respelled for Spanish, and Janeth is Janet with an h. The chain is short and every link is a spelling decision: Jane became Janet, English-speaking families added an h, Colombian families changed the J to a Y so the name could be read correctly in Spanish. Its American peak is 1993.

Where it comes from

The story of Yaneth

Colombian and Venezuelan naming took a strong turn towards English-language sounds from the mid-twentieth century, and because Spanish spelling is phonetic those borrowings had to be rewritten to be readable. Spanish j is said as an h, so any name starting with an English J needs a Y instead: Jason became Yeison, Johnny became Yoni, Janeth became Yaneth. The added h at the end belongs to a separate Latin American habit visible in Lizeth, Yulieth, Nazareth and Janeth. Both moves together produce a name that looks unfamiliar to English readers and is entirely ordinary in Colombia.

Meaning

God is gracious

Janet is a diminutive of Jane, formed with the Old French -et ending, and Jane descends from Jehanne, the feminine of Jehan, from Latin Iohannes and Hebrew Yohanan — 'Yahweh is gracious'. The meaning survives every respelling intact. The h in Janeth and Yaneth is not etymological; it appears in Latin American spellings of several names and gives the ending a little more visual weight.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling produces the correct sound for Spanish and English readers alike.
  • The meaning is settled and shared with one of the most widely borne names on earth.
  • Yani is an easy short form that works in both languages.
What to consider
  • Yaneth, Janeth and Janet all circulate and hers will be written as one of the others.
  • The final h is silent and gets dropped by people writing from dictation.
  • It is rare enough in English-speaking America to need spelling out.
