Yalonda
Feminine · “violet”
Yalonda is one of the American spellings of Yolanda, and the family it belongs to has a strange member: a name invented for a comic opera in the 1880s that has been mistaken for an ancient one ever since. Iolanthe was made up by W. S. Gilbert, and it has been quietly absorbed into the same cluster as Yolanda and Violante.

Where it comes from
From a medieval European name of uncertain meaning to Yalonda
The story of Yalonda
Gilbert wrote an opera about a fairy who had married a mortal and been banished for it, and he needed a name for her that sounded like something out of a medieval romance. Iolanthe is the result — built to look like Yolande, which is real, and like the Greek word for a violet, which is also real, but attested nowhere before he wrote it down. The opera was a hit and the name went into circulation, and it has appeared in name dictionaries as a Greek flower name ever since. It is a good example of how quickly an invention can acquire an etymology once enough people assume it must have one.
Meaningscholars disagree
violet, though the reading is a guess
The traditional explanation connects the whole family to the word for a violet, and it has never been demonstrated. What can be said is that the cluster contains at least one name that is definitely invented, which should make anybody cautious about the antiquity of the others. This spelling writes the first vowel as an a, which is what the unstressed syllable actually sounds like and not what the European original records.

- Yolande and Violante in French and Italian use

Fashion outlook
Yalonda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spelling records the sound honestly, which the European original does not.
- It has real European history behind it, whatever the flower reading turns out to be worth.
- The rhythm is strong and it carries well when called across a room.
- Yolanda is far commoner and will be written instead on most documents.
- The meaning she will be given is traditional rather than established.
- Nothing distinguishes this spelling from half a dozen others except the family that chose it.
