Wylie
Masculine · English roots · “Either a Scots pet form of William”
Wylie is given to both — 6,073 boys and 792 girls since 1880. See Wylie as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Wylie began as a surname — Scottish for many families, English for others — and made the ordinary journey from last name to first that so many American boys' names have taken. It has been on the books since the earliest US name statistics were kept, never common, never quite gone. Two syllables, spelled the way it sounds, with the long open vowel that Wyatt and Riley share.

The story of Wylie
The name reaches given-name use through the surname, which is recorded in both Scotland and England from the medieval period onward. Scottish Wylies carried it to Ulster and then in large numbers to America, where it settled into the South and the frontier states; English Wileys and Wylies arrived by other routes with the same sound. Somewhere in nineteenth-century America the surname started being handed to sons as a first name, a habit that also produced Wyatt, Riley and Cody. A Texas railroad town took the name too, which is part of why the name still reads as at home in that part of the country.
Meaningscholars disagree
Either a Scots pet form of William, a place name from the River Wylye, or Middle English 'wily', crafty
Three serious readings compete. In Scotland, Wylie is widely traced to Willie, the familiar form of William, respelled as families and clerks heard it. In England, it points to the River Wylye in Wiltshire and the settlements along it, which also gave Wilton and the county its name. A third line reads it as a byname from Middle English wily, meaning cunning or crafty — the kind of nickname that hardened into a surname. No one reading has won out, and a family carrying the name may descend from any of the three.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Reads correctly on sight for most English speakers: WY-lee, first try, no coaching needed.
- Has been present in American records since national name statistics began, never disappearing entirely — a long, quiet, unbroken line.
- Sits in an established American pattern of surnames used as first names, alongside Wyatt, Riley and Cody, so it needs no introduction as a type.
- Uncommon enough that a child will most likely be the only one in a school, without the name being unfamiliar to anyone.
- Short form Wy is already in real use, so there is a nickname ready without inventing one.
- Wiley is the more common spelling of the surname in the US, so expect to correct it regularly — forms, coffee cups, teachers' lists. It is a one-letter fix, but a lifelong one.
- The Middle English sense 'wily' and the cartoon coyote Wile E. sit close to the sound. Most people never make the connection, but some will, and older relatives may be the ones who do.
- The -ie ending puts it near Kylie, Rylie and Ellie, so people who have not met the name sometimes assume a girl on paper. In US records it is counted on the boys' side.
