Ash is the English word for a tree — the pale, springy wood that Anglo-Saxon poets called æsc and used for spear shafts, so that the same word could mean both tree and weapon. It's one syllable, ending in a soft brush of a sound, and it needs no explaining at a coffee counter or a roll call.

How old is the name Ash?

Ash first appears in US birth records in 1975 — 50 years ago. The typical Ash is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,500 people named Ash are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Ash most popular?

Ash peaked in 2023, reaching #1064 nationally. Today it ranks #1176, 112 places below that high. See the whole 2023 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Ash

The ash was a working tree in early England: tough, straight-grained wood for tool handles and spears, and the Old English word for it, æsc, also named a rune in the futhorc alphabet. In Norse cosmology the world tree Yggdrasil is described as an ash, and the Eddas name the first man Askr — the ash — carved from wood on the shore. As a given name in English, Ash arrived far later, mostly through the back door: surnames like Ashley and Ashton were adopted as first names, Asher came through the Hebrew Bible, and Ash was what people actually said. In recent decades it has been given on its own, as one of the crop of short, plain, no-nonsense word names.

Meaning

ash tree; also a short form of Asher, Ashton and Ashley

The word name comes straight from Old English æsc, the ash tree. Separately, Ash arrives as a clipping of longer names — Asher (Hebrew, "happy, blessed"), Ashton (Old English, "ash-tree settlement") and Ashley. Both roads are real, and a child called Ash can be standing on either.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled as an everyday English word, so it survives phone calls, forms and teachers' registers without a single correction.
  • One syllable, which sits easily in front of almost any surname and cuts cleanly through a noisy playground.
  • Works as the short form of Asher, Ashton or Ashley, so a formal long name is available if you ever want one.
  • Long documented life in English as a word and a place-name element, well before it was used as a first name.
What to consider
  • For a great many Americans the first Ash they ever met was the Pokémon trainer from the animated series. It's a friendly association rather than a bad one, but expect it to come up, especially from other kids.
  • A one-word name carries its whole dictionary entry: ash is also what's left after a fire, and Ash Wednesday is in the calendar. Most people never make the jump, but some will.
  • Ash also reaches girls, through Ashley, so it isn't read as exclusively male everywhere — occasionally someone will need a beat to place it.
  • There is nothing to shorten and no formal alternative built in, which some families like and others miss. Naming him Asher or Ashton and calling him Ash solves it if that matters to you.
