Deandre
Masculine · “Built on André”
Deandre is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 29,495 boys against 452 girls since 1880.
Deandre is an American-made name, assembled in the twentieth century from the productive prefix De- and André — the French form of the name the Greek New Testament gives to the apostle Andrew. Three open syllables, landing on that bright -dray at the end, with Dre sitting inside it ready to be used. It is past its high point now, but strongly represented among adults, so it is a name that has already been carried through school, work and adulthood by a whole generation.

The story of Deandre
The root is old and well traveled: Greek Andreas, from anēr, 'man', became Andreas in Latin, André in French, Andrés in Spanish, Andrew in English, spreading with the cult of the apostle Andrew across Europe. Deandre belongs to a much more recent chapter — the mid-twentieth-century United States, where a rich tradition of name-building, strongest in African American communities, joined prefixes like De-, La- and Ja- to established names to make something new. Deandre and its siblings appeared on the national charts in that wave and grew through the second half of the century. It is one of the clearest examples of American names being invented rather than inherited, from parts that were themselves inherited.
Meaning
Built on André, from Greek Andreas, 'man, manly'
The De- at the front is a naming element rather than a word: it has been used across a large family of American names — Deandre, Deshawn, Demarcus, Dewayne — and carries no independent translation. The meaning lives in the second half.

The Bart test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Deandre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bart climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bart's path sketches the road Deandre is walking now.
Deandre sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Comes with Dre and Dee already in use — short forms that need no explanation and work at every age.
- The second half, André, is recognized in French, Spanish, German and Russian forms, so the root is familiar far beyond the US.
- Several decades of continuous use on American records, which means it is neither new nor tied to a single moment.
- Common enough that people have heard it, uncommon enough now that a child will likely not share it in a classroom.
- The capitalization is genuinely unsettled — Deandre, DeAndre and D'Andre all circulate. You will be spelling it out on forms for life, and it helps to pick one version and stay with it.
- The final syllable trips people who read before they hear: expect occasional dee-AN-der or dee-AN-dree until corrected.
- Names in the De- family have been used in American hiring-bias studies, and that research describes employers, not the name. Worth knowing about, not worth deciding on alone.
- It carries a clear stamp of late twentieth-century American naming, so it may read as belonging to the generation now in its late twenties rather than to newborns.
