Our story of Winry
Our story of Winry is unusually short and unusually clear. A manga began serialisation in Japan in 2001, and one of its central characters — an automail mechanic who builds prosthetic limbs and is the emotional anchor of the story — was given a name her author made up. The series became one of the most widely read of its generation, and English-speaking readers who grew up with it began giving the name to daughters. It appears in the American registers in the 2010s. That is the entire history: one author, one character, one decade.

The Sherley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Winry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sherley climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sherley's path sketches the road Winry is walking now.
