Sherley
Feminine · “Bright clearing”
Sherley is given to both — 1,238 girls and 264 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
English merged the vowels of bird, herd and word into one sound several centuries ago, and the spellings never caught up. That is why Shirley, Sherley and Shurley are the same name: three different letters standing for a vowel that stopped being three vowels a long time before anybody wrote these down.

The story of Sherley
The merger is one of the largest changes in the history of English pronunciation and almost nobody notices it, because the spelling hides it completely. In Middle English, bird, herd and word had three distinct vowels; over a few centuries they collapsed into one, the sound now written with an r after it in all three, and the old spellings stayed where they were. A word's letters therefore record which vowel it used to have rather than which one it has. Names went the same way, and because names are not standardized by dictionaries, all three spellings survive in the record instead of one. The name also changed sex in the twentieth century, and the record shows the older spellings staying behind with the men after the newer one had gone to the women.
Meaning
Bright clearing
Old English scir, bright or clear, and leah, a clearing in woodland; a place name before it was a surname and a surname before it was a given name. The vowel in the first element has been through the merger described above, which is why the modern spelling with an i is no more correct than the one with an e, only more common.
How the name formed
- scir leah
- Shirley
- Sherley
Pronouncing Sherley
SHUR-lee
Two syllables with the stress at the front. Shirley and Sherley are said identically by every American speaker, since the vowel they are trying to write is the same one; British and Australian speakers drop the r and lengthen it, which is also the same in both.

Fashion outlook
Sherley sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is completely established in English and never needs repeating.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms across generations.
- Sherl and Lee are two short forms with nothing at all in common.
- The i spelling is standard and this one will be corrected by almost everyone who writes it.
- The record carries it for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- The name is tied to one film star and one generation in American memory.
