The story of Aritzel
The oak of Gernika, under which the lords of Biscay swore to respect Basque liberties, made aritz a word of real weight in Basque identity, and Aritz is an ordinary Basque name. Aritzel is a separate development in Mexican and Mexican-American naming, appearing in the American registers from the 2000s alongside Aracely, Maritzel and Anayeli.

oak
The front element is the Basque aritz, 'oak', which gives the names Aritz and Haritza. The -el or -zel ending is not Basque and appears to be added in Mexican use, possibly by analogy with Maritzel or Aracely. The compound is not documented in Basque sources, so only the first half is settled.

Line the two peaks up, and Sherley's path sketches the road Aritzel is walking now.

The trade-off
- The Basque oak carries genuine historical weight, and the tree of Gernika is real.
- Ari and Itzel are two short forms, both names in their own right.
- The end stress gives it a strong rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
- Only the first half has a documented origin; the ending appears to be added.
- The tz will be mispronounced by most English speakers.
- It is very new and has little record behind it.
