Willadean
Feminine · “will and helmet”
The Norman Conquest wiped out the English stock of men's names inside about a century. Aethelred, Leofric, Wulfstan and Godwine went; William, Robert, Richard, Henry and John came; and by 1200 a huge share of English men were called one of five things. There is nothing else like it in the record.

The story of Willadean
The replacement was total and fast. Anglo-Saxon names were compounds built from a large stock of elements and families varied them freely, so a village had a great many distinct names in it. Within a few generations of 1066 the Norman names had taken over almost completely, and the surviving records show something close to the opposite situation: a very small number of names shared by an enormous number of people, which is precisely why English surnames had to be invented to tell them apart. William was the largest of the newcomers. Willa is a much later feminine, and the -dean ending belongs to the American South, where double names were said as one and eventually written that way.
Meaning
will and helmet
Willa is a feminine of William, Germanic wil, will or desire, with helm, a helmet or protection. The -dean ending is an American addition with no source. The compound is a twentieth-century southern double name written closed up.

The Maryanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Willadean's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maryanna climbed just as high around 1908, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maryanna's path sketches the road Willadean is walking now.
Willadean sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The front half has a documented Germanic meaning with both elements traceable.
- Three short forms, two of which are full names in their own right.
- It belongs to a real regional naming tradition rather than a fashion.
- Most people will use Willa and stop there.
- It is strongly represented among the oldest generations and reads clearly as of that time.
- The -dean ending has no meaning, so only half the name says anything.
