Whisper
Feminine · “a whisper”
The wh in whisper is spelled backwards. Old English wrote these words hw — hwaet, hwa, hwil, hwisprian — which is the order they are actually said in. Norman scribes reversed the letters to match French habits, and English has been saying one thing and writing the other ever since.

The story of Whisper
The hw to wh reversal affected the whole class at once: what, when, where, which, why, white, while, whale, wheel and whisper all begin with a spelling that is back to front. Scottish and Irish English still say the h first, which is why some speakers distinguish whales from Wales and most Americans do not. Whisper itself is worth a second note. A whispering gallery is a curved space where a quiet voice at one point can be heard clearly at another far away — the dome of St Paul's in London is the famous one — and physicists borrowed the term for a class of waves that travel round the inside of a curved surface, which is now used in laser design.
Meaning
a whisper
From Old English hwisprian, to speak very quietly, which is an imitative word — it sounds like what it names, in the same family as hiss, rustle and murmur. The modern spelling reverses the original letter order and changes nothing about the sound.

The Christia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Whisper's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Christia climbed just as high around 1975, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Christia's path sketches the road Whisper is walking now.
Whisper sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
