The story of Westly
John Wesley, born in 1703, and his brother Charles founded the movement that became Methodism, and their surname passed into given-name use among Methodists within a generation — an unusually direct case of a religious movement naming children after its founder. Methodism was enormously successful in America, particularly in the South and on the frontier, which is why Wesley is far more common as a given name in the United States than in England. The Westly spelling drops the e of the original and belongs to a general American habit of trimming silent letters, which also produced Ashly, Bently and Kimberly from longer forms.
Meaning
the western meadow or clearing
Old English west and leah — the second being a woodland clearing or a meadow, the element that survives as -ley, -leigh and -lee in thousands of English place names. Wesley, Westley and Westerley are the same compound with different amounts of the original spelling retained. The derivation is completely settled; the only variation is which places the surname came from, and there are several.

Pronouncing Westly
WEST-lee
Two syllables, stress on the first. The t is fully sounded in this spelling, which distinguishes it slightly from Wesley, where many American speakers drop it — WEZ-lee. That small difference is the practical effect of the extra t.

The Texas test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Westly's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Texas climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Texas's path sketches the road Westly is walking now.

- The trimmed spelling reads as an error to people who know the surname.
- It is easily heard as Wesley, Westin or Weston.
