Wael
Masculine · “one who seeks refuge”
There is a consonant in Wael that English cannot write. Arabic has a glottal stop, the catch in the middle of the exclamation uh-oh, and it counts as a full letter; between the a and the e of this spelling there is one, and English transliteration simply leaves it out.

The story of Wael
Wa'il is an old Arabian name, borne by a pre-Islamic tribal ancestor whose descendants, the Banu Wa'il, are named in early Arabic genealogy and poetry. Names of that stratum are among the oldest continuously used in the language. When Arabic names are written in the Latin alphabet the hamza is the first thing to go, because English has no letter for a sound it uses constantly and never writes; the result is a spelling that looks like two vowels in a row and is actually a vowel, a consonant and a vowel. Wael entered United States records with Arab migration and reached its best year in 1978.

one who seeks refuge, one who returns
Arabic Wa'il, from a root w-'-l covering taking refuge, seeking shelter and returning to safety. The usual reading is one who takes refuge or one who returns. A secondary reading, one who is saved, follows from the same sense. The apostrophe in careful transliterations marks the glottal stop, a real Arabic letter called hamza.

Two syllables with a glottal stop between them, so the vowels do not run together. English speakers usually say WAIL in one syllable, which is a different word and the commonest adaptation.

The Jona test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Wael's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jona climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jona's path sketches the road Wael is walking now.
Wael sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A pre-Islamic Arabic name with a documented tribal history behind it.
- Four letters, easy to write, and no silent letters in English terms.
- Rare in the United States while being ordinary across the Arab world.
- The glottal stop is invisible in this spelling and will be lost in English mouths.
- It is read as the English word wail on first sight.
- Wa'il and Waeel are both used in more careful transliterations.
