Where it comes from

Our story of Waddell

For three centuries the frontier between England and Scotland was administered under its own body of law, March law, by wardens on both sides who met at agreed places on agreed days to settle cross-border complaints. There was a recognized procedure for pursuing stolen cattle into the other kingdom, a legal category for a man who lived on neither side, and a strip of ground between the two that belonged to nobody and was known as the Debatable Lands, where no one could lawfully live. The system existed because ordinary law could not reach the place. It produced a large body of surnames, a great many ballads and a reiving economy that both governments eventually destroyed when the crowns united.

The surname is usually traced to a place in the Scottish Borders and the place name's own sense is argued over. It has also been proposed as an anglicization of an Irish name, and the record does not choose.

Fashion outlook

Waddell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly at first sight and rarely needs spelling twice.
  • It sits in the large family of surnames Americans are used to seeing in front position.
  • Two syllables with a strong ending carry well across a room.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • It reads as a surname to most listeners, which suits some families and not others.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has two candidates and no answer.
