Our story of Viva
Very few names in English are verbs. Nouns are ordinary — Rose, Faith, Hope, Grace — and adjectives are common enough, but a command is unusual, and Viva is one. The word entered English as an acclamation borrowed from Italian and Spanish, familiar from opera and from political slogans long before it was anyone's name. What made it usable as a name in nineteenth-century America is probably that it was also available as a clipping of Vivian, which gives the sound a respectable domestic reading alongside the shouted one. The 1894 peak sits in the same decade as Ola, Ora, Iva and Eva, a whole class of short vowel-heavy women's names that the era produced in quantity and that has been out of use since 1930.

Live!, long live
Latin and Italian vivat and viva are forms of the verb to live, used as an acclamation — viva il re, long live the king. That reading is transparent. As a name Viva may equally be a short form of Vivian or Viviana, from Latin vivus, alive, which shares the root. Which of the two produced a given American bearer is not recoverable.
