The story of Vianey
Jean-Marie Vianney was sent to a small village in 1818 as an academically weak priest and spent forty years there, eventually hearing confessions sixteen hours a day as people traveled from across France to see him. He was canonized in 1925 and made patron of parish priests. Mexican Catholic naming took the surname as a women's given name, and Vianey appears in American records with Mexican families.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Shanel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vianey's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shanel climbed just as high around 1983, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shanel's path sketches the road Vianey is walking now.
