Our story of Venna
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence in 1820 and named for it, as her elder sister Parthenope was named for the Greek name of Naples. When Nightingale became the most admired woman in the English-speaking world after 1855, the city name became a girl's name on a scale that had nothing to do with Italy, and Florence stayed in the American top ten for decades. That success made the whole category respectable, and the records of the following fifty years are full of Genevas, Veronas, Odessas, Alvenas and Viennas. The layer has almost entirely disappeared now, which is why it reads as unfamiliar rather than as old-fashioned: it is not that these names went out of style, it is that the practice behind them stopped. Venna belongs to that lost habit, whether or not any particular family meant a city by it.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Venna has no established etymology. It sits close to Vienna, to the Latin Venus and to clipped forms such as Genevieve and Vennie, and the records cannot separate them. Its 1903 peak places it in the decades when European city names were widely used for American daughters.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
