Vella
Feminine
Vella is a small name from a period that made many of them. The story of Vella
The -ella ending ran through nineteenth-century American women's naming with enormous force: Ella, Bella, Stella, Luella, Nella, Vella and Zella all appear in the records, most of them given outright rather than as short forms of anything. Families made them freely and traded the opening consonant, exactly as families do now. The whole set went quiet after the First World War, and only Ella and Bella have come back so far.

Not established
Several accounts and no certainty. It appears as a clipping of Louella, Novella and Vellamae. The Latin bella, beautiful, is often given and cannot be shown, since v and b are different letters in every language that fed American naming. And Vella is a common Maltese and Italian surname, which reached the United States separately.

About 1 girl in 36,529 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 59,528 for Vella itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Five letters and two syllables: quick to write and impossible to mispronounce.
- It has a documented American record going back to the nineteenth century.
- It sounds like Ella and Bella while being far rarer than either.
- Bella and Vella differ by one letter and will be swapped constantly.
- Its origin is genuinely unresolved, so any meaning given for it is a guess.
- It reads as of the late nineteenth century, which is heritage to some families and age to others.
