Vanesa
Feminine

Vanessa is one of the very few names whose invention can be dated. An Anglo-Irish satirist made it in the early eighteenth century for a friend, building it from the first syllable of her Dutch surname and the pet form of her first name. Vanesa is the Spanish spelling, with a single s, and it is the commoner form across Latin America.

The story of Vanesa
The poem that introduced the name was written in the seventeen-tens and published after both its author and its subject were dead, which is how a private nickname became a public name. English took it up slowly, then quickly, and by the twentieth century it was ordinary in Britain, Germany, Italy, Spain and Latin America. Spanish orthography does not double the s between vowels, so Spanish-speaking families write Vanesa, and that is the standard spelling from Mexico to Argentina.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name was coined rather than inherited, so it has no meaning in any language. It was built by joining the opening of a Dutch surname to a shortened Esther. A genus of butterflies was later named after it, which is the reverse of the usual order: the name gave the insects their label, not the other way round.

The Antonetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vanesa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Antonetta climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Antonetta's path sketches the road Vanesa is walking now.
Vanesa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Vane and Nessa are ready short forms of quite different registers.
- Its invention is documented to a decade, which almost no other name can claim.
- Vanessa with two s is the English standard, so this spelling will be corrected in American paperwork.
- The v is said differently in Spanish and English, giving the child two versions of her own name.
- The name has no meaning at all, which some children find disappointing and others find freeing.
