Antonetta
Feminine
Antonetta carries a meaning that was invented in the Renaissance. The Roman clan name behind it has no established derivation, and the pretty reading everybody offers, about being beyond price, was constructed by scholars who assumed a Greek connection that does not exist. The clan itself preferred a different story: they claimed descent from a son of Hercules.

The story of Antonetta
The Antonii were one of the great plebeian houses of the late Republic, and like several such families they supplied themselves with a heroic ancestor: they claimed descent from a son of Hercules, which conveniently made them older than most of the patrician families looking down on them. Roman genealogical claims of that kind were routine, understood to be constructions, and taken seriously anyway, because a family that could afford to have such a claim made had already demonstrated the thing the claim was for. The name's actual origin is lost. It was probably Etruscan, like a good deal of early Roman vocabulary, and if it meant anything to the people who first used it, nobody wrote it down.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Roman clan name has never been explained. The reading about inestimable worth comes from a Renaissance guess at a Greek root and is not supported by anything; it is repeated in reference works to this day. The French and Italian diminutive endings on this form contribute nothing. What can be said is that the family was old, plebeian and important, and that its name was already opaque in antiquity.
How the name formed
- A Roman clan name of unrecovered meaning
- Antonia and Antoinette as European feminines
- An Italian diminutive ending added

Four syllables with the stress on the third. Italian holds the doubled t audibly and English does not, so the doubling here is doing the English job of marking the vowel before it as short.
