Where it comes from

The story of Ubaldo

Germanic two-element naming built names from a fixed stock of words in free combination, and both halves of Ubaldo are among the most productive. The name came into Italy with the Lombards and was fixed there by Saint Ubaldo Baldassini, bishop of Gubbio in the twelfth century, whose feast is still marked by the Corsa dei Ceri, a race of enormous wooden pillars carried through the town every 15 May. That local cult is why the name is common in Umbria and the Marches specifically. It spread to Spain and Mexico through the Church, and American figures peak in 1975 with Mexican-American usage.

Meaning

Germanic "bright mind, bold thought"

From Old High German hug, mind or thought, plus bald, bold or brave — Hugubald or Hugibald, which Italian smoothed to Ubaldo. The English adjective bald in the sense of hairless is a separate word of uncertain origin; the name element is the ancestor of bold. Compare Archibald, genuinely bold; Theobald, bold people; Baldwin, bold friend. The same hug element gives Hugh and Hubert.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves of the name have settled meanings in Old High German.
  • It is fully established in Italy, Spain and Mexico with a named patron saint.
  • Baldo gives it a natural short form.
What to consider
  • English speakers hear bald inside it, which is a false but persistent reading.
  • The initial vowel is regularly mispronounced as yoo.
  • It is rare in the United States outside Mexican-American and Italian-American families.
