Where it comes from

The story of Tziporah

Zipporah is the daughter of the priest of Midian who marries Moses at the well, and in a passage of three verses that nobody has satisfactorily explained she circumcises their son with a flint and saves Moses from being killed by God on the road. The name stayed in Jewish use throughout and is common in observant communities today; Ashkenazi pronunciation gives Tzipporah and the short form Tzipi.

Meaning

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled meaning that is concrete and easy to explain to a child.
  • Tzipi is a warm short form already in universal community use.
  • A documented biblical figure with a genuinely striking scene behind her.
What to consider
  • The tz is one sound in Hebrew and gets split by English speakers.
  • Zipporah is the English biblical spelling and looks quite different.
  • It is strongly marked as a Jewish name, which is the intention in the families that use it.
