The story of Tzipora
Tzipporah marries Moses when he is a fugitive in Midian, and in a passage in Exodus that has puzzled readers for two thousand years she circumcises their son with a flint and touches Moses with it when God is about to kill him. Nobody has satisfactorily explained the scene, and it is one of very few places where a woman acts decisively in a priestly capacity. The name stayed in Jewish use and reaches United States records through observant Jewish families, spelled Tzipora, Tzipporah and Zipporah.
Meaning
bird
Hebrew tzippor means a bird, the small kind, and Tzipporah is the name built on it with a feminine ending. The reading is exact and undisputed. The word appears throughout the Hebrew Bible for birds generally, and it is one of the plainer names in the book — a creature rather than a quality or a claim.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The tz is a single ts sound, made together rather than as two consonants — English has it in cats but not at the start of a word, which is the difficulty.

The trade-off
- A concrete meaning — an actual bird — rather than an abstract quality.
- Tzippy and Tzipi are both ready short forms with real currency.
- A documented biblical figure with an unusually striking role.
- The tz opening does not occur at the start of English words and will be simplified to a z.
- Tzipora, Tzipporah and Zipporah are one name in three spellings that look quite different.
- The short form Zippy is an ordinary English adjective, which comes up.
