Our story of Tyus
The -us ending is one of the few classical markers that modern American naming has adopted wholesale, and it works because it is unmistakable. Latin masculine nouns end in -us, English ones almost never do, and a name carrying it announces a Roman connection whether or not one exists. Darius, Marius, Julius and Titus supply the genuine cases; Tyus, Amarius, Kadarius and Jamarius supply the constructed ones. What is interesting is that the ending has kept its dignity through all of this: it still reads as formal and slightly grand, which is not true of every borrowed ending. An element can be applied to invented names for thirty years and remain respectable, and this one has.

Not established
No documented source. If the name descends from Titus, that Roman praenomen has no settled etymology either — proposals connect it to a Sabine word and to Latin titulus, and neither is demonstrated, which is the usual situation with Roman praenomina. If it is instead Ty- plus an -us ending, it has no meaning at all. The -us terminal is used in American naming to give a modern name a classical appearance, as in Darius, Marquis and Cornelius.

The Jacinto test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tyus's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jacinto climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jacinto's path sketches the road Tyus is walking now.
