Where it comes from

The story of Jacinto

Hyacinthus was a Spartan youth loved by Apollo and killed by a discus, and the flower was said to spring from where he fell. The name passed into Christian use through a series of saints, most visibly a thirteenth-century Polish Dominican, and Spanish and Portuguese kept it as Jacinto. The gemstone jacinth takes its name from the same word. In Spanish-speaking countries Jacinto has been an ordinary name for centuries, and it reaches United States records with Mexican and Spanish families rather than through any English route.

Meaning

hyacinth; the flower

Greek Hyakinthos names both the youth in the myth and a flower — though probably not the one modern botany calls a hyacinth, since the ancient descriptions do not match. The word itself is pre-Greek, taken over from a language spoken in the region before Greek arrived, which means the name is older than the story attached to it. The reading as the flower is documented; what the word originally meant is not recoverable.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented classical origin with an unusually memorable story attached.
  • Chinto and Jaci are both established Spanish short forms.
  • Three syllables that read correctly in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian alike.
What to consider
  • The Spanish and English pronunciations of the initial J are entirely different.
  • It is a flower name for a boy, which is ordinary in Spanish and unusual in English.
  • In the United States outside Spanish-speaking communities it will be spelled out often.
