The story of Tyriek
In 711 a force under Tariq ibn Ziyad crossed from North Africa and landed at the rock at the entrance to the Mediterranean, beginning a conquest that took most of the Iberian peninsula within a decade and set up eight centuries of Muslim rule in Spain. The rock became Jabal Tariq, Tariq's mountain, and Spanish wore that down to Gibraltar. The name itself belongs to the vocabulary of knocking and striking: a tariq is one who comes by night and knocks at the door, and the word is used of a bright star that pierces the darkness, which is how the Quran's eighty-sixth sura employs it. American respellings of the name are numerous, and this one writes the long vowel with ie.
Meaning

From Arabic tariq, from a root meaning to strike or knock, used of one who arrives at night and by extension of a bright star. Sura 86 of the Quran is named for it. Tyriek is an American respelling of Tariq; the peak is 1998.

Tyriek's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lindon climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lindon's path sketches the road Tyriek is walking now.
