Our story of Tyreek
Ours, offered as ours. Tariq is a genuinely beautiful word: it means one who comes by night and knocks, and Arabic applied it to the morning star because that is what the star does — arrives in the dark and announces itself. The eighty-sixth chapter of the Qur'an is named At-Tariq. Tariq ibn Ziyad led the invasion of Spain in 711 and Gibraltar is named for him, Jabal Tariq, Tariq's mountain. Whether Tyreek descends from any of it is unrecorded.

one who knocks; the morning star
Arabic tariq is one who arrives at night and knocks, and by extension the morning star; a chapter of the Qur'an is named for it. Whether the American Tyreek descends from Tariq or was built from Ty- and -reek is not documented.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dedric test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Tyreek's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dedric climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dedric's path sketches the road Tyreek is walking now.
Tyreek sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
