The story of Trudy
Gertrude of Nivelles was a seventh-century Frankish abbess who ran a monastery and sheltered travelers, and her cult made the name common across the Low Countries and Germany. German and Dutch produced back-half short forms — Trude, Truus, Trudy — while English took the front for Gertie. American use of Trudy rose through the 1930s and peaked in the early 1950s.
Meaning
strength
Through Gertrude, from the Germanic ger, 'spear', and thrud, 'strength'. Trudy preserves the second element. The same thrud appears in Ermentrude and Waltraud, and it is one of the standard building blocks of old Germanic women's names.

The Avis test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Trudy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Avis climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Avis's path sketches the road Trudy is walking now.

The trade-off
- Gertrude stands behind it with a documented Frankish abbess and a transparent meaning.
- The back-half derivation gives it a sound entirely unlike the front-half short form Gertie.
- Bright and easy in every English accent.
- The parent name is firmly out of fashion, which affects how the short form reads.
- It is period-coded to the middle of the twentieth century.
