Trevin is what happens when a name fits into more than one family at once. It has the Tre- of Trevor and Tremayne, the -vin of Kevin and Devin, and the two overlap so neatly that it is impossible to say which one it was cut from. Names in that position spread fast.

How old is the name Trevin?

When was the name Trevin most popular?

Trevin peaked in 2008, reaching #797 nationally. Today it ranks #6446, 5,649 places below that high. See the whole 2008 chart.

Where it comes from

Our story of Trevin

A name that belongs to two families gets recruited by both. In the 1990s American naming had a Tre- group, carrying Trevor, Trey, Tremaine and Trenton, and a -vin group, carrying Kevin, Devin, Marvin and Gavin, and any word that sat in the overlap was heard as familiar by two sets of ears at once. Trevin does exactly that, and its curve shows it: a fast rise through the 1990s and 2000s and a best year of 2008, later than either parent family's own peak. Names in an intersection tend to arrive last and to be read as obvious rather than as new, which is why nobody who meets a Trevin asks what it is. The cost is that it has no history of its own to point to.

Not established

If it descends from Trevor, the source is Welsh tref fawr, big settlement, and the meaning would come with it. If it is built from the Kevin and Devin rhyme family, it has none: those two are unrelated Irish names, Caoimhin and Damhan, and the -vin they share is a coincidence of anglicization. Trevin is more likely the second, and no source can settle it.

Pronouncing Trevin

TREV-in

Two syllables with the stress at the front and the second reduced. Some families say truh-VIN with the weight at the end, which is closer to the Tre- names than to the -vin ones.

Trevin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 275 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Trevin went to 13 boys in 2025, but Trevyn is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 20, which makes it the 908th most-given boys’ name of the year — 5,538 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 85,404 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 131,390 for Trevin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds familiar to everyone the first time, because it belongs to two known families.
  • Tre and Trev are both short, current and completely established.
  • Six letters and no possible misspelling.
What to consider
  • Trevon, Trevan and Trevin all circulate and get confused.
  • It has no settled origin, so the meaning depends on which parent you claim.
  • The Tre and -vin fashions both date it to the 1990s and 2000s.
