Reino
Masculine · “counsel”
Reino is a Finnish man's name built by cutting a longer Germanic one down and giving it a Finnish ending, and it is also an ordinary Spanish noun meaning a kingdom. American records hold both without distinguishing them. Its Finnish generation arrived alongside a language that had only recently acquired a literature.

The story of Reino
Finnish had almost no printed literature in the eighteen-twenties, and its educated classes largely wrote in Swedish. A country doctor named Elias Lönnrot spent years walking through Karelia with a notebook, staying in farmhouses and recording the sung oral poetry that people there still performed — long alliterative lines, sung by two men facing each other and clasping hands, about a smith, a singer and a stolen mill that produced wealth from nothing. He arranged what he collected into a continuous epic, filling gaps and choosing between variants, and published it. It gave the language a foundation document, fed a national movement, and its meter traveled far enough that an American poet borrowed it for a long poem about Hiawatha. How much of the finished epic is folk material and how much is Lönnrot's editing has been argued about ever since.

counsel, or the deciding powers
Finnish took a Germanic name beginning with the element for counsel and shortened it, and which longer name a particular family had in mind is not recoverable. The identical Spanish word for a kingdom is unrelated and has also been used as a name, which the American record cannot separate.

Two syllables with the stress at the front, as Finnish always places it. Spanish speakers reading the same letters say RAY-noh as well, which is one of the few cases where two unrelated sources agree.

Fashion outlook
Reino sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Five letters, no silent ones, and no realistic way to misspell it after hearing it.
- It reads correctly in Finnish, Spanish and English without alteration.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape a man's name can have.
- Spanish speakers will hear an ordinary noun rather than a name.
- Reno and Rayno will both be written for it.
- Which longer name it was cut from is not recorded, so the meaning is a family resemblance rather than a descent.
