Trever
Masculine · “big settlement”
The -or of Trevor is not the English suffix that makes actor and sailor. It is the Welsh word fawr, big, mutated to for at the end of a compound, so Trevor means the big settlement. Respelling it -er removes a Welsh adjective and replaces it with nothing.

The story of Trever
Trefor is a real place in north Wales and a real Welsh personal name, and it became a surname before it became a widely used English first name in the twentieth century. English speakers writing the name from hearing produced Trevor, which keeps the vowel, and Trever, which does not. The second belongs to a general American habit of resolving unfamiliar endings toward familiar ones: -or and -er are pronounced identically in unstressed position, so the letter is a free choice and the more common English ending wins. Trever's best year in United States records is 1994, riding the general Trevor wave of that decade.
Meaning
big settlement, large homestead
Welsh tref, a settlement or homestead, plus mawr, big or great, which mutates to fawr and is written -for or -or in the compound. The same tref opens Cornish Tremayne in its Cornish form tre. The English ending -er in this spelling has no Welsh warrant and carries no meaning; it is an assimilation to an English pattern.

Trever's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Enrico climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Enrico's path sketches the road Trever is walking now.
