The story of Tirzah
Tirzah is the youngest of the five daughters of Zelophehad in the book of Numbers, who came before Moses to say that their father had died without sons and that his inheritance should not therefore leave the family. The ruling went their way, and it is one of the few places in the Hebrew scriptures where a legal principle is changed on a woman's argument. Tirzah is also a city — an early capital of the northern kingdom before Samaria — and the Song of Songs uses its name as a byword for beauty. English families took it up after the Reformation, when the whole Hebrew stock came into ordinary Protestant use.
Meaning
she is pleasing; delight
Hebrew Tirtzah is built on the root r-tz-h, 'to be pleased with, to accept favorably' — the same root behind ratzon, will or favor. The reading is documented and not disputed. The same word names a Canaanite city, which the Song of Songs calls beautiful in a line of praise.

Pronouncing Tirzah

Two syllables, stress on the first. Hebrew says teer-TZAH, with the stress at the end and a tz rather than a z in the middle. The English saying has moved the stress forward and simplified the consonant, as it does with most Hebrew names.

The trade-off
- A documented biblical name with an exact meaning and an unusually good story attached to it.
- Uncommon enough to be distinctive without being invented or unpronounceable.
- The z gives it a distinct shape on paper among softer biblical names.
- The English and Hebrew pronunciations differ noticeably, so the child will hear both.
- Tirzah, Thirza and Tirza are all in use, and the h at the end will be dropped by strangers.
- It is a strongly scriptural name and will be read as a statement of tradition.
