Historical novelists have a term for a fact so authentic that readers reject it, and they call it the Tiffany problem. Tiffany is a genuine medieval name — girls born at Epiphany were given it in twelfth-century England and France — and no editor will let you use it, because it sounds like 1985.

Where it comes from

The story of Tiffani

Theophania is the manifestation, and the feast celebrates the showing of the child to the world — in the western church, the visit of the magi. Naming a child for the day she was born on was ordinary practice, which is how Noel, Natalie, Pascal and Epiphany all became names, and Tiffany is the English one. It went quiet for four centuries. Then a New York jeweller carried the surname, the surname carried a shop, the shop carried a film title, and the name came back in the 1980s attached to none of its history. That gap is why the name reads as modern and why the medieval evidence is so hard to use in fiction.

Meaning

the appearance of God

From Greek Theophania, the showing of God, which is the feast of the Epiphany on the sixth of January. Medieval French made it Tiphaine and English Tiffany, and it was given to girls born on or near the day. The word and the feast are the same.

Tiffani sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 643 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Tiffani went to 7 girls in 2025, but Tiffany is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 311, which makes it the 663rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,269 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,168 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Tiffani itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Greek meaning tied to a specific date in the calendar.
  • A documented medieval history that almost nobody knows about.
  • Three short forms, two of which are in easy current use.
What to consider
  • Tiffany is far commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward it.
  • It is closely associated with one decade of American naming, which places the bearer in time.
  • A famous jewelry house owns the surname, and the association is not negotiable.
