Rubye
Feminine · “red”
The ruby is named for being red and nothing else. Latin rubeus is simply the word for red, and medieval Latin called the stone rubinus lapis, the red stone, which wore down to ruby. Rubye adds a final e to the word — a Victorian and Edwardian habit that made a plain noun look like a name.

The story of Rubye
Gem names arrived in English naming together and behaved as a set: Ruby, Pearl, Opal, Beryl, Garnet and Jewel all appear in the same decades and fade in the same ones. Ruby was the most used of them. The final e in this spelling belongs to a related habit of the period — adding a silent e to a short word name to distinguish the person from the thing, which also produced Fayette, Verne and Maye. It changes nothing audible and it changed how the name looked on a page, which was the whole point.
Meaning
red
Latin ruber and rubeus mean red, and the same root gives rubric, which was red lettering, and rubella, which is a red rash. The stone took its name from its color with no further ceremony. Ruby entered English naming in the nineteenth century along with Pearl, Opal and Beryl, in a wave of gem names that ran alongside the flower names of the same period. The derivation is not disputed and could hardly be simpler.

Fashion outlook
Rubye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Everyone knows the word, so the name is never mispronounced.
- The meaning is one syllable long and needs no explanation at all.
- The final e makes the written name distinct from the noun, which is what it was added for.
- Ruby is the standard spelling and this will be rewritten as that on nearly every document.
- The silent e has to be dictated every time and will still be dropped.
- The name belongs to an earlier American period, though Ruby itself has come back and this spelling has not.
