Teo
Masculine · “gift of God”
Teo is the short form Southern Europe reached for when Teodoro or Mateo felt like a mouthful — a clipping used in Spanish, Italian, Croatian and Romanian households long before it appeared in American records. Three letters, two open vowels, and nothing in it to trip over in any of those languages. In the United States it is still new enough that most Teos will be introducing the name rather than sharing it.
How old is the name Teo?
Teo first appears in US birth records in 1968 — 57 years ago. The typical Teo is a kid of about 6 — this name's wave is very recent. About 3,000 people named Teo are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from
From Theodoros to Teo
The story of Teo
The older road runs through Greek Theodoros, a name well established in the eastern Mediterranean by late antiquity and carried across Europe by the church: Teodoro in Italian and Spanish, Teodor in Romanian, Polish and the Balkans, Theodor in German and Scandinavian use. Teo is the everyday clipping of all of those, and in Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia it has long since stopped needing the long form behind it. The second road is Spanish and Italian, where Mateo and Matteo are trimmed the same way, from the tail rather than the front. Separately, Teo is also a common Hokkien and Teochew surname in Singapore and Malaysia, a romanization unrelated to the European given name.

gift of God
Teo shortens two different long names, and the two roads land in nearly the same place. Through Teodoro and Theodore it goes back to Greek Theodoros, from theos 'god' and doron 'gift'. Through Mateo and Matteo it goes back to Hebrew Mattityahu, 'gift of Yahweh'. Which one a given Teo comes from depends on the family, not on the spelling.

The Ean test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Teo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ean climbed just as high around 2007, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ean's path sketches the road Teo is walking now.
Teo is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Three letters, spelled exactly as it sounds, and short enough to fit any form field or monogram.
- Works unchanged in Spanish, Italian, Croatian, Romanian and Slovenian — no translation, no respelling at a border.
- Can sit under a longer formal name if you want one: Theodore, Teodoro, Mateo and Matteo all shorten to it.
- Part of a name family with a record stretching back to Greek Theodoros in late antiquity, so it is new here without being new anywhere.
- The Theo comparison is constant. Expect "Theo with a T-H?" at every appointment and enrollment, and expect some people to write it that way regardless.
- The pronunciation splits: TAY-oh in the languages it comes from, TEE-oh from most American readers. Neither is wrong, but your child will be doing the correcting.
- In the US it is still rare enough that a Teo will likely be the only one in the class — pleasant for some families, slightly effortful for others, since the name gets explained a lot in the early years.
