Manx Gaelic made Ean from John, and Scottish Gaelic made Iain and Eoin. The Isle of Man kept its own form until Manx Gaelic ceased to be spoken natively in the twentieth century. Ean appears in the American registers as a spelling of Ian and is in current use.
