The story of Ray
Raymond began as the Germanic Raginmund and traveled with Norman French into England after the eleventh century, where it settled comfortably enough to be used for centuries. It flourished especially in the south of France and in Catalonia — the counts of Toulouse used it generation after generation — and it survives there still as Ramon and Ramón. English speakers clipped it to Ray, and by the time American record-keeping began, Ray was being written on birth certificates as a full name in its own right, not merely an abbreviation. Separately, Ray existed as an English surname, and the plain word ray sat behind it, which is part of why the spelling has never needed explaining.
