Haziel
Masculine · Hebrew roots · “vision of God”
Haziel is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,700 boys against 19 girls since 1880.
Haziel is one of the small names in the Hebrew Bible that most readers pass over — a Levite listed among the sons of Shimei in the book of Chronicles, given a line and no story. It ends the way Gabriel, Daniel and Ezekiel end, with that same -el, the Hebrew word for God, so American ears already know how to hold it. In Spanish-speaking families it comes out softer, three quick syllables landing on the last.

The story of Haziel
The name belongs to the Levite genealogies of Chronicles, compiled after the Babylonian exile: Haziel appears there among the Gershonite Levites, named and then left alone. Because it never attached to a major figure, it stayed almost unused in Christian Europe while its cousins — Daniel, Gabriel, Michael — filled the baptismal registers. It resurfaced through a different door: Haziel is one of the seventy-two angel names of the Shem HaMephorash lists in Kabbalistic tradition, which spread into French esoteric publishing in the nineteenth century and from there into Spanish and Portuguese angel-name books. Its arrival on American records is recent, and it is strongest in the Southwest, where the Spanish reading of the name is at home.
Meaning
vision of God
The second element is El, "God"; the first comes from the Hebrew root chazah, "to see" or "to have a vision." You will see it rendered both as "vision of God" and "God sees" — the same root, read from either end.

That is the Spanish reading, with a silent h and the stress on the final syllable. English speakers commonly say HAY-zee-el or hah-ZEE-el instead. Both are in real use in the US, so it helps to decide early which one your family will correct people to.

The Trystan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Haziel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Trystan climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Trystan's path sketches the road Haziel is walking now.
Haziel is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Sits inside a pattern American ears already know — the -el ending shared with Gabriel, Daniel and Ezekiel — so it is rarely met with confusion about what kind of name it is.
- Works without adjustment in both English and Spanish households, which is unusual for a name this uncommon.
- Documented in the Hebrew Bible, giving it a written record far older than its use on American birth records.
- Rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate, but built from familiar sounds rather than invented spelling.
- It looks a great deal like Hazel, which in English is overwhelmingly a girls' name. Expect a fair amount of mail addressed to Hazel, and some readers assuming a girl before they meet him.
- Two live pronunciations, English and Spanish, means the name will be said back to him differently depending on the room. Families usually settle on one and repeat it, which is a small ongoing task rather than a problem.
- No short form has settled into general use, so nicknames will be whatever your family invents. Some parents like that; others prefer a name with a ready-made informal version.
