The story of Tayana
Two things carried the name in Russia. The first is St Tatiana, a third-century Roman martyr whose feast falls on 25 January, the day the Empress Elizabeth signed the founding decree of Moscow University in 1755; the university's church was dedicated to her, and the day became the students' festival of the whole country, still marked with some enthusiasm. The second is literature: Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, published in the 1830s, made its heroine Tatyana Larina the model of a certain kind of Russian seriousness, and the name has never left the top ranks since. It traveled to English-speaking countries in the twentieth century, where the Russian stress on the second-to-last syllable is usually kept, and the American respellings, Tayana and Tiana among them, simplify the middle of it.
